Pastoral note, from Garrett
Anybody feeling artsy? Or do you feel like escaping the heat for an afternoon? Next Tuesday, we’re gathering at the San Antonio Museum of Art at 4 p.m. Tuesdays from 4-7 p.m. Bexar County residents get free admission to the museum (with proof of county residence—i.e., your driver’s license).
Right now, the museum has on display an ancient relief sculpture from the palace of the Assyrian king Ashurnasirpal II at Nimrud, in present-day Iraq. The relief portrays the head of a winged figure, from a series of protective divinities (probably apkallu, wise men or sages) that alternated with stylized trees to decorate one of the palace’s reception rooms. This sculpture dates to the century before the Assyrians invaded Northern Israel. The Assyrian shadow hangs over much of the Hebrew Bible. This will offer a great chance to learn more about them and see the museum’s many other offerings. You can go at your own pace or stick with the group.
This Sunday, after church, you can come and learn about neurodivergence. This umbrella term includes things like autism and ADHD— in other words, you or someone you know is neurodivergent. This is an introductory conversation with Harrison Litzell of the Baugh Center for Baptist Leadership. More info below. Please register so we know to order you a lunch.
Thanks to all who showed up to move chairs into the sanctuary today (see the pic below). We are still over a month away from moving back in, but we needed to move chairs into the sanctuary because the new organ arrives this week. Tuesday to Thursday, they will be setting it up and ‘tuning’ it to the room. We are going to have far fewer chairs with arms in Maresh Hall starting Sunday. It will mostly be folding chairs. Please reserve the armchairs for those who need them.
We have our last (of the summer) Family Fellowship Night tonight at 5:30 p.m. We’ll be talking about how every living thing needs water. To prove that point, we will also be closing the office on Thursday (July 9) because the water will be off due to renovation work on the water line.
Grace and peace,
Garrett Vickrey
Senior Pastor
