Pastoral note, from Lance
A common phrase regularly circulates this time of year: “Are you ready for Thanksgiving?” The meaning is somewhat clear. Have you bought the groceries you need? Is your house ready for guests? Or, do you have a travel plan all set? Are you surviving (or thriving) in the pace of life heading toward Thanksgiving?
Yes, the holiday season is always a busy time of year. We have kids’ end-of-semester activities, from finals and projects to concerts and competitions. We have end-of-year work activities and projects. We have church activities and concerts. We have family gatherings and parties and meals and so much more.
In the midst of your busyness, I encourage you to pause for a moment and write down a list of things you are thankful for. Be sure and count the small, everyday items like the beat of your heart, as well as the large, macro items like God’s love for all of humankind, and everything in between.
Now pull out your calendar and add a few things to your to-do list:
Sunday, November 30: First Sunday of Advent
Sunday, November 30: Advent Family Activity Pick-Up (after 9 am & 11 am services) in the Atrium
Saturday, December 6: Gift Making Workshop
Thursday, December 11: LifeTimers
Sunday, December 14: Gloria In Excelsis Deo, A Choral & Orchestral Celebration at 4 pm at Alamo Heights UMC featuring the Woodland Sanctuary Choir, Woodland Choral Scholars, Woodland KidzSing, San Antonio Youth Chorale, Members of Alegria, and Members of the San Antonio Philharmonic
Yes, there is so much to get done and to do. Don’t miss out on the simplicity of being thankful to God and to people around you. I’m thankful for all of you. I’m thankful for your love, the example you set, and your tireless service to our neighbors.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Lance Mayes
