Pastoral note, from Garrett

Advent began on Sunday. It’s the period of four Sundays (and the days between) that lead up to Christmas Day. Advent means “coming” in Latin. This season of preparation marks the start of the Church Year. Yes, the church created its own calendar to mark time by the story of Jesus— Advent, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost, and Growth (i.e., Ordinary Time).

Our worship services, according to artist Scott Erickson, are “visible mechanics that help us get to the invisible essence of the love of God.” Advent is a tad countercultural. At a time of year when we are obsessed with cutting wait times, getting the fastest delivery, and avoiding traffic, Advent invites us to wait. Advent invites us out to the desert with John the Baptist, where the treats are sparse, but the locusts are plentiful.

This Advent, I invite you into the visible mechanics of a patient posture. And as you wait, look around in wonder. You might be surprised at the graces that await.

Here’s what’s coming up…

The annual Gift-making workshop is this Saturday at 9 a.m. This tradition goes back to our founding church (Manor Baptist). Children are invited to make crafts to give as Christmas gifts.

The Sanctuary Choir Concert is at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church on December 14 at 4 p.m. This is going to be a special night. Don’t miss out. Our choir has been working hard to prepare. The KidzSong choir is also working hard (14 minutes a Sunday) to prepare for the concert. There will be an offering that night for the San Antonio Food Bank.

The concert is at 4 p.m., which means it will let out at the perfect time to head next door to Torchy’s for tacos. Just throwin’ that out there…

On Christmas Eve, we will have 3 services in Maresh Hall. The 3:00 p.m. service will be geared toward children. All are welcome… just know what you’re getting into if you show up at 3. The 5:00 & 7:00 p.m. services will be traditional candlelight services with carols and readings.

 Grace and peace,

Garrett Vickrey
