Child of God Bed Ministry

The “Child of God Bed Ministry” was created to provide beds for children being served by Child Protective Services. The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) does everything they can to keep families together — we work with Child and Protective Services (CPS). One way is to make sure every child in the home has their own bed to sleep in. Some families have children sleeping on pallets on the floor, some on couches, and some sleep 2, 3, or more in the same bed. Woodland provides these beds at no cost to families.

Woodland has received grants from Home Depot, 84 Lumber, Walmart, Sam’s Club, HEB, Greehey Family Foundation, McCombs Foundation, and San Antonio Area Foundation. We use grants and donations to purchase lumber, hardware, mattresses, mattress covers, pillows, and bedding.

We have volunteers who build most of the beds (we’ve purchased a few). We have volunteers who deliver the beds. We’ve partnered with South Texas Alliance for Orphans and First Baptist Church to help us deliver and assemble beds. South Texas Alliance for Orphans is an organization that helps churches in serving foster children and their families.

Woodland is now part of CarePortal (as of 01/12/2023). We use CarePortal to receive and respond to needs. If you are part of the Woodland Child of God Bed Ministry, we recommend joining CarePortal as part of the Woodland Child of God Bed Ministry Response Team. You will be able to see needs and be activated to help meet those needs. Click here to join the Response Team. Click here to view the CarePortal needs. Click here to learn more about CarePortal.

The Child of God Bed Ministry accepts twin bed and mattress donations. Please see our Twin Bed Gift Acceptance Policy here.

We received this wonderful story from Sara Rangel, Regional Manager San Antonio for CarePortal.

I wanted to share a quick story about Request #156290 with you.  This request was for a bed for a five-year-old girl.  The caseworker shared that she visited the family and that the little girl was eager to show her her new bed and butterfly comforter.  The caseworker said the comforter was special because the little girl loves butterflies.  Her comforter complemented her room, which had butterflies on the walls.

There was no way you all could have known that this little girl loved butterflies, yet she received a comforter with butterflies that brought her immense joy!  I just wanted to let you know that the mom, little girl, and caseworker are grateful to you all!  Thank you for all you do for the children and families of Bexar County!  We appreciate you!

Each bed and bedding costs about $475 (not including labor or delivery which are provided by volunteers).
