Did You Know — Dementia Care Givers Support Group
A Missions Moment Brought to you by the
Missions & Ministries Committee
Woodland Church has a wonderful Dementia Caregivers Support Group. The group, led by Doralee Shannon, meets on the fourth Sunday of each month at noon in the Conference Room. The purpose is to support one another and learn from each other’s journey, and accept dementia for what it is, not for what we want it to be. They begin each meeting enjoying lunch provided by the Travelers Sunday School Class.
Here is a little more from Doralee.
We have approached this ministry from the aspect of helping the caregivers. This is a tough job! Dementia teaches us the depth of our capacities to be patient, kind, and, most of all, unconditionally loving. One has to be spiritually strong and prepared for a long journey. The caregiver has to take care of her/himself before they can take care of someone else, especially with dementia. Our main focus is to make their job easier by providing the right information. It is so helpful when someone has already been where you are and they share how they handled their situation.
We welcome anyone interested in attending, whether Woodland church members or not. We want to help anyone who wants help. We all need it. Some people aren’t ready; we hope you are. Once you have attended a meeting, you will wonder how you’ve done without the support and compassion of those experiencing the same journey.
Each month, we discuss where each caregiver/patient is on their journey. The changes, what they are experiencing, new meds, whatever is going on. Sometimes there are small or no changes and other times there are difficult changes. When they go from one stage to the next, it can be very trying. Caregivers need a break during these difficult times. A respite house is always a good thing to consider if you don’t have someone else in the family to step in and help. There are many services available depending on your needs.
You don’t have to suffer alone; we are here for you. Please give us a chance to help you.
Do you know anyone who is a caregiver for someone with dementia? Connect them with Doralee. This group is for everyone, not just Woodland members.
