Pastoral note, from Garrett

We are in the season after the epiphany, where the stories of Jesus we read in worship are chosen because they reveal something about the nature of Christ. Last Sunday, we read the beginning of Jesus’ sermon on the plain in Luke 6. This coming Sunday, we will read what might be the ethical imperative that defines the Christian faith more than any other: love your enemies.

We have many guests in worship right now. In fact, we will be adding seats to the sanctuary to accommodate the crowd. It’s getting hard for people to find seats. You have probably noticed that we moved the rows of chairs forward and left the back row empty. The reason is that if we have to add chairs, we add them to the back row instead of parading guests to the front. Guests tend to arrive later, and it’s awkward for them to go up to the front. Accommodating people slipping into the back row is more comfortable and hospitable.

LifeTimers is this Thursday. Diana Bridges will speak on “Life in the Age of Google Translate.” You won’t want to miss it.

Our friends at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church have a fun event we’re invited to this coming Sunday afternoon. The youth of Antioch are putting on a Living Black History Museum at 3 p.m. in the Antioch Sports Complex (Next to the church at 1001 N. Walters). The youth have prepared historical speeches of important Black persona from San Antonio’s history and retell the story as you walk through to each person. It’s an engaging activity for children, youth, and adults.

Grace and peace,
Garrett Vickrey
