John 16:33
As His final days on this earth were closing in on Him, Jesus gave much attention to his disciples, striving to prepare them for what was to come in their lives. It seems that their clarity came and went. Following a lengthy dialogue with the twelve, Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you will have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Alas, following his crucifixion we well know that life did not open to an easy road for the disciples and the Savior’s followers who came to know and love this charismatic man who brought physical and spiritual healing to the lives He touched.
The world is no more peaceful now than it was then. Due to eye-blinking communication with a world in turmoil and unrest, fear and despair are exacerbated like never before. Is there no way to distance ourselves from materialism, abounding chaos and confusion that sets our minds reeling with concern for the entire planet? After all, Jesus said, “I have overcome the world.”
Interestingly enough, it is the 17th century Archbishop of Cambrai, Francois Fenelon, who offers we reach toward simplicity that leads to inner peace. Let the fetters fall from our shoulders. Be free of “the intoxication” toward the material life and self-centeredness. Learn to lean into the things of the Sprit. It requires diligence, patience and devotion to the God who gave us His Son that we might know what truly brings peace into our lives.
